Federal Highway Administration Awards Major Contract to Roadway Safety Foundation

(WASHINGTON, DC) September 20, 2006 - The Federal Highway Administration awarded a major public road safety contract to the Roadway Safety Foundation today.

Roadway Safety Foundation Executive Director Greg Cohen commented, “Each year, at least 43,400 motorists lose their lives on the nation’s roads and highways, of which 13,000 are due to poorly designed roads. This grant provides a tremendous opportunity to educate the public and officials on how to eliminate road hazards and save lives. The Roadway Safety Foundation is thrilled to be selected for this road safety program, and to work with the Federal Highway Administration at improving the safety of our nation’s roads and highways.”

“Safety is our top priority,” said Federal Highway Administrator J. Richard Capka. “Lessons learned from the best — and worst — road design elements are a critical resource for the nation’s transportation planning community and do much to protect motorists.”

The road safety assistance agreement was created according to legislative authority established in the federal highway bill, SAFETEA-LU in section 1411. The four-year contract has three major objectives:

  • Improve the quality of safety data gathered nationwide,
  • Develop a public awareness campaign which educates the public about road hazards,
  • Share road safety research studies and new technologies among government agencies.
